Project Description:
The SC Assistive Technology Program (SCATP) is a statewide program that provides services based on the assistive technology (AT) needs of South Carolinians of all ages and disabilities. The overall goal is to get assistive technology into the hands of the people who need it. The SC AT Resource Center offers a central location to help South Carolinians have access to the assistive technology they need to be independent, productive citizens in community, work, education, and daily living activities. The Center is open to people with disabilities, their families, teachers, therapists, service coordinators, as well as students in higher education. SCATP staff members provide device demonstrations and consultation to AT Teams, to help them make recommendations about appropriate assistive technology for the people they serve. SCATP staff manages the statewide equipment loan program to help consumers and service providers make informed decisions when choosing assistive technology. SCATP helps South Carolinians acquire AT through the SC AT Exchange, an online recycling database that lists affordable and free AT devices or equipment. SCATP also works with Walton Options as part of the Southeastern Technology Access and Reuse (STAR) Network and Portlight Strategies to provide pick up, sanitization and delivery of used equipment to South Carolinians statewide. SCATP provides trainings throughout the year at the local and state level that are attended by a wide variety of professionals and consumers. The annual statewide AT Expo features workshops, information, training, and demonstrations of the most up-to-date equipment and software. The AT Expo provides an opportunity for hands-on experience with AT. SCATP provides leadership to the statewide AT Advisory Committee (ATAC). ATAC assists state agencies and higher education in their provision of accessible information. Through ATAC, SCATP administers a web testers program in which people who use AT evaluate accessibility and usability of state agency web pages. SCATP staff members also serve on the SC Emergency Management Division, Special Needs Committee offering technical assistance regarding disaster preparedness as it relates to people with special needs in a disaster situation. SCATP assiststhe SC Vocational Rehabilitation Department in administering an AT Financial Loan Program and the SC Transition Education Service Team?s Youth Leadership Forum designed to help teens with disabilities build leadership skills. SCATP staff members provide resources and support to the Department of Education Assistive Technology Specialists to maximize their ability to assist school AT teams statewide. SCATP publications include the web page (with comprehensive resources and links), fact sheets, and an interactive CD ROM focused on integrating assistive technology in the classroom. SCATP staff manages three listservs focused on assistive technology, AT reutilization, and web accessibility.
