Project Description:
Our Physician Education Awareness Program (PEAP) provides third year medical students and genetic counseling masters students from the University of South Carolina School of Medicine with invaluable experience gained from an in home visit (virtual) with a family who has a member with a developmental disability. This effort is implemented in collaboration with the USC/Prisma Health Developmental Pediatric Clinic in the School of Medicine and with Family Connection of South Carolina (the PTI). The medical students learn directly from the family, including the person with a disability, about how to improve medical care, their experiences with educational, medical and other systems of support and overall how to have a future medical practice that is maximally responsive to the needs of their patients with intellectual and related disabilities.
