Project Description:
This project is an extension of the "Untold Stories about Sexual Violence" available at https://sonorancenter.arizona.edu/research/untold-stories-about-sexual-violence. The focus of the Collaborative Approach Project is to address the recommendations identified in the Untold Stories final report. The report, based on 26 interviews that included survivors, families, and disability professionals emphasized that sexual violence is underreported, not addressed adequately, and requires increased awareness and training among systems. The objectives of this project include: 1) increase public awareness about sexual violence among diverse stakeholders, 2) create an inventory of resources that will be hosted on the Sonoran Center for Excellence in Disabilities website, 3) examine two policies that can enhance support for survivors with I/DD, 4) engage with policymakers in their efforts to strengthen existing laws for the prevention of abuse and neglect, and 5) integrate sexual violence and I/DD content into existing curriculum. This project requires extensive coordination and commitment from organizations and systems that support individuals with I/DD. Expected benefits include increased awareness of the issues, understanding of the importance of lived experiences, and continued discussion and coordination among all communities.
