Project Description:
The Institute for Human Development (IHD) has established an interdisciplinary clinic at Northern Arizona University (NAU) to provide students with interdisciplinary training experiences in child assessment and intervention. All services are provided by students under supervision of faculty from their respective academic areas. Participating disciplines include speech pathology and audiology, nursing, physical therapy, special education, social work, psychology, nutrition, dental hygiene, educational psychology, and engineering. Children birth through 15-years-old may be referred to the clinic for a general developmental assessment and/or to address specific concerns of development, behavior, nutrition and/or dental health. Contact the clinic to make a referral. A referral packet will be mailed out requesting information about the child's medical and developmental history and the reason for the referral. Also included in the referral packet are forms that must be signed by a parent or legal guardian that release information to the clinic students and faculty and indicate approval for the child to participate in clinic activities. Children will be selected for the clinic based on the capacity of the university students and faculty to appropriately address the referral questions. A completed referral packet does not guarantee acceptance for clinic services. The family or guardian will be notified of available assessment dates, the clinic location, and the various professional disciplines that will be involved with the child. The family, guardian, or referring agency is responsible for transportation. University students will gather information about the child's strengths and needs through caregiver interviews, child observation and interpretation, the presentation of structured activities and tasks, and the administration of standardized assessment procedures. Preliminary results will be shared with the family or guardian immediately following each clinic session. Within one month after a child's final clinic visit a written report will be prepared and mailed to the child's family or legal guardian and to other designated service providers or agencies. A follow-up conference and/or answers to specific questions regarding the report are available by contacting the Clinic Coordinator.
