Project Description:
Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) interventions can increase expressive language, and literacy, social, and adaptive skills for children with severe communication impairments. However, they are often underutilized in speech-language therapy for toddlers due to lack of therapists with experience using AAC. Telehealth can transform the delivery of early augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) interventions by expanding access to appropriate speech-language therapy, mitigating health disparities among rural communities, and reducing costs. Examining AAC interventions telehealth service delivery has important clinical implications because there is limited research on its efficacy. The implementation strategies needed to support wide-scale adoption of early AAC interventions in routine clinical practice are not known. The purpose of this implementation science proposal is to develop and pilot-test a hybrid (in-person and telehealth) AAC intervention for toddlers with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) and their families.
