Perinatal Mental Health Intervention
Project Description:
Provide mental health services to pregnant women and their families receiving medical care in the CHLA Fetal Maternal Center and Fetal Cardiology clinics. The program's goal is to provide trauma-focused consultation services to expectant parents preparing for the birth of an infant diagnosed in utero with a complex medical, genetic and/or developmental condition, who will need care in the CHLA Newborn and Infant Critical Care Unit (NICCU) or Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit (CTICU). The program promotes healthy parent-child attachment and supports expectant parents as they prepare for their baby's birth.
Anticipated outcomes include: Mental health support for expectant parents during medical visits will help them be more "present" during interactions with the medical team. Also, expectant parents will:
• Actively participate in decisions about the pregnancy, their baby's care, and their baby's developmental needs
• Be better prepared to support each other and meet the needs of their other children during this challenging time
• Have an increased capacity to bond with their high-risk infant during pregnancy, in the days following birth, and after they take their baby home from the hospital
