Project Description:
1. Maintain a cadre of at least 10 diverse family members trained in evidence-informed emotional, informational and systems navigational support (through in person, phone, electronic communication) to support parents, siblings and guardians of youth and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) employed at or contemplating subminimum wage employment to transition to Competitive Integrated Employment (CIE). Particular attention is given to DARS pilot sites: Mt Rogers, NW Works, Hermitage Enterprises and SOAR365. a. Family mentors will receive 12 hours of training in general evidence-based emotional and informational support, and effective practices for supporting change when individual beliefs and collective mindsets create immunity to change and resistance to their family member's transition to CIE. 2. Develop at least 3 avenues of family support for parents/family members/guardians that considers generational preferences. For example: a. Maintain a toll-free number and generic email for requesting telephone support that includes 1) responding to a referred parent within 48 hours of the referral, 2) matches the family with a trained parent mentor within 48 hours of intake, and 3) documents from each call the issues and concerns expressed by the parent and the unbiased resources and referrals provided to the parent b. Set up and maintain a closed, facilitated Facebook support group where families can support and mentor one another c. Explore piloting a family training from Eric Carter with Vanderbilt University 3. Develop with DARS a process for providers to refer to the CFI for family support a. Meet with DARS project and pilot provider staff to determine process b. Develop a postcard (hard copy and electronic) that can be shared with parents, family members and guardians about family support options c. Ensure HIPPA compliance in referral process
