Language Matters: Golisano Children's Hospital Inclusive Language Initiative

Center:
Fiscal Year:
2025
Contact Information:
Project Description:
The GCH Inclusive Langauge Initiative seeks to increase inclusive language and reduce/eliminate stigmatizing language across the Golisano Children's Hospital, with specific attention to language used between GCH team members, language used in conversation with patients/families, language used in public-facing communication, and language used in the electronic medical record. The desired outcomes of the GCH Inclusive Language Initiative are that every Child/Youth gets the care they need, when they need it, in the way they need it; the language we use with one another, in conversations with children and families, in EMR documentation, and in our public relations promotes safety and belonging for all who seek care at GCH; people feel valued and respected within our children's hospital, as reflected in the language we use. The theme of the GCH Inclusive Language Initiative is: What We Say Matters, What We Do Matters: Listen, Connect, Learn and Support. There is a Language Matters workgroup that meets monthly. In addition, the workgroup presents on a specific Inclusive Language theme every month at a children's hospital-wide GCH Update Meeting and 1-page information sheets are provided following each update meeting.
