Project Description:
Through a collaboration between the Center on Disability Studies UCEDD Trainee program and the nonprofit DocSong.org, students and staff at UH Manoa have used music to highlight stories that reveal deep insight about connection, empathy, belonging and resilience.
Documentary Songwriting is a unique step-by-step process of collaborative songwriting that builds a shared sense of humanity. This method breaks down the creative process, making it accessible for anyone, regardless of their musical background, to transform a personal story into a meaningful song.
UCEDD Research Trainees from the Center on Disability Studies participated in the DocSong.org teaching artist training program, an intensive 40 hour training experience to learn how to facilitate the documentary songwriting process. They then put their skills to work meeting with UHM students with disabilities to listen to their stories about navigating college and collaboratively turned those stories into an original song spending an additional 20 hours to co-create original songsabout their lived experience.
