Project Description:
The Lakeland Village Project involves the University of Washington Institute on Human Development and Disability (IHDD) in preserving historical records and artifacts related to the treatment of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). These items, discovered at Lakeland Village, a state-operated facility established in 1916, include medical records, letters, images, films, and various historical artifacts. The University of Washington's role in this project includes collaborating with the Washington State Archives and the Department of Social and Health Services to develop a comprehensive preservation plan. This plan will detail how these records and artifacts will be organized, cataloged, and stored to ensure their long-term preservation. Additionally, the university will help in assessing the condition of these items, outlining steps for their preservation, and planning for their digitization and public accessibility for educational purposes. The project aims to preserve this important history and use it to shape future policies and improve service delivery for individuals with IDD.The project underscores the importance of understanding past treatments to inform better outcomes and enhance future services for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
