FERTALY: Assessing Knowledge, Attitudes, and Behaviors Regarding PrEP Use in Montana
Project Description:
Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is an important prevention strategy for reducing HIV transmission. Expanding the use of PrEP among groups at high risk for HIV infection, including men who have sex with men, people who engage in high-risk sexual activities, and people who inject drugs, has been identified as an important part of the national initiative to end the HIV epidemic in the US. Montana is in the lowest 25% of states for PrEP uptake, with only 12% of individuals who are indicated for PrEP receiving it. The 2022 Montana HIV and Hepatitis C Needs Assessment identified several barriers to PrEP uptake in the state, including healthcare providers' discomfort with and lack of knowledge about discussing and prescribing PrEP, as well as lack of awareness and resources among local health department staff regarding how to help clients access PrEP. The proposed study uses a sequential mixed methods approach to understand the barriers to PrEP uptake among indicated Montana residents. It will include a state-wide survey to capture barriers that may be specific to geographic regions or specific populations. It will also include qualitative interviews to explore the identified barriers and facilitators to PrEP use in more depth. HIV is recognized as a disability under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The proposed PrEP Needs By identifying barriers to PrEP use, we aim to support HIV prevention efforts, potentially reducing the number of people who may become infected with HIV. This approach supports prevention of a life-altering condition and aligns with our commitment to ensure that everyone, especially those at high risk and within vulnerable communities, have equitable access to essential preventative measures and health services.
