Advancing Disability Justice within Health Professions Education
Project Description:
Globally, approximately 1.3 billion people are living with significant disabilities. And more than 70 million people with disabilities live in the US. Yet relatively few health professions training programs substantively integrate content designed to prepare students to provide safe, effective, and high quality healthcare to people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (PWIDD).
To address this need, the Center on Disability Studies will develop 12 flexible online learning modules (30-50 minutes each) that can be integrated into health professions education programs and/or delivered as a complete online training or graduate course.
Each module will include stories, anecdotes, quotes and/or other media that center the perspective and healthcare experiences of people with IDD. The Project Advisory Council, whose membership includes PWIDD and community stakeholders, will ensure that respect for the leadership, ideas and contributions of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities are at the forefront of project planning, development, and evaluation.
As a result of the curriculum modules, successful nursing students and other health professions students should be able to apply their learning toward the aims of safe, respectful, high quality care for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (PWIDD), and promote healthcare experience wherein PWIDD feel welcome, respected, and valued.
For instance student will learn how to:
• Apply knowledge about patients' rights and health professionals' responsibilities under the ADA & Section 504
• Apply practical skills and familiarity with assistive technologies toward effective communication with PWIDD.
• Apply principles of trauma-informed healthcare for PWIDD, to improve healthcare experiences of PWIDD.
• Apply principles of patient centered care and supported decisionmaking to improve treatment planning.
The ultimate aim of this collaborative curriculum development process and project, is to improve the safety and quality of healthcare that health professionals deliver to adults with IDD.
