1.02 CDSM - Critical Disability Studies Minor Program
Project Description:
The Disability Studies Minor is designed to provide interdisciplinary opportunity for University of Texas students to broaden conception and understanding of disability.
Need: The opportunity for students of varied disciplines to broaden conception of disability from multiple perspectives will support integration and understanding. The Disability Studies Minor supplements current offerings that are scattered among departments and even colleges. Contrary to how disability is being taught in most disciplines in education, the medical fields, and the sciences that seek to look at disability only from the diagnosis and treatment perspective, the DS Minor would approach and view disability and disability related issues from the socio-cultural lens thus expanding knowledge and human understanding. The interdisciplinary nature of the proposed coursework would provide students with an appreciation of the many factors that affect human diversity, and the reciprocal relationship that exist between the students disciplines and disability studies.
Goals: The objective of the Texas Center for Disability Studies (TCDS), under the administrative umbrella of the School of Social Work (SSW) is to establish a Disability Studies (DS) Minor at the University of Texas at Austin (UT). The DS minor will launch in Fall 2019. The TCDS is one of 67 federally designated and funded University Centers for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (UCEDD) across the country charged with conducting research and providing teaching, training, and information dissemination.
Features: A collaboration of five colleges at the University of Texas is the foundation for the Minor.
Benefits: Facilitate awareness of disability and disability studies.
