Project Description:
The University of Illinois at Chicago, through its National Center on Physical Acticity and Disability (NCPAD), will develop and operate a rehabilitation engineering and research center focused on improving the health, wellness, and quality of life of people with disabilities by promoting and facilitating increased participation in physical activity and recreation. The proposed rehabilitation engineering and research center will be a partnership in which people with disabilities, engineers, researchers, and business people work collaboratively to research, develop, and demonstrate and evaluate new approaches to increasing access to and participation in physical activity and recreation activities for people with disabilities. In addition to the University of Illinois at Chicago, this partnership includes the University of Colorado Computer Science and Engineering Divisions and the Coleman Institute for Cognitive Disabilities; LifeFitness, Inc. the world's largest manufacturer of fitness equipment; and the VA Palo Alto Health Care System. The four primary target areas are a) Increased Access to Fitness and Recreation Environments; b) Interventions to Increase Physical Activity and Recreation Participation; c) Adherence Strategies to Reduce Physical Activity relapse and Dropout Rates; and d) Randomized Clinical Trials to Evaluate Improvements in Health and Function.
