Training: UR NICHE Medical - Expanding the AADMD NICHE Medical Curriculum
Project Description:
The University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry (URSMD) has been selected as a Medical School Partner of the National Inclusive Curriculum for Health Education Medical (NICHE-MED) project of the American Academy of Developmental Medicine and Dentistry (AADMD). The AADMD NICHE-MED project supports United States medical schools to implement curriculum about health care for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) across the lifespan. Most medical students/trainees receive little training on supporting the health and wellbeing of people with disabilities.
The goal of the University of Rochester/School of Medicine and Dentistry (UR/SMD) NICHE-MED project (UR NICHE) is to understand and address gaps in URSMD medical education regarding health care for people with IDD. This is a medical education project.
The proposed UR NICHE project includes three primary aims:
1. Centralize the administration and management of existing disability-focused curricular content to establish a recognized longitudinal URSMD Disability Curriculum, ensure consistency and longevity of this curriculum, and to address gaps in IDD medical knowledge and skills.
2. Expand the URSMD Disability Curriculum to enhance medical student education on the health disparities faced by the disability community, including increasing the number of opportunities for students to interact with and learn from people with IDD.
3. Develop an educational resource guide, Supporting Communication with and for People with Disabilities, to be included within a centralized AADMD resource repository.
