Project Description:
The Early Childhood Doctoral Leadership Consortium (ECiDC) is funded by the US Department of Education, Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP) to develop, implement and evaluate a doctoral program for scholars about infants and young children with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Twenty-two doctoral students are being trained in advanced research and pedagogy specific to early childhood intervention through a consortium of 9 university doctoral programs in early childhood intervention in the disciplines of special education, occupational therapy, physical therapy, social work, and speech-language and hearing sciences. Participating IHEs include University of Cincinnati; University of Colorado – Denver, University of Connecticut, University of Georgia, University of Hawaii, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, University of Washington, and Vanderbilt University. The core curriculum focuses on four competency areas (1) pedagogy for infants and young children; (2) advanced research methods; (3) teaching in institutes of higher education; and (4) community engagement and advocacy. Scholars collaborate in research and scholarship with faculty and other scholars across the consortium to support family and child outcomes via high-quality early childhood intervention service systems. Content areas with competencies include family-centered partnerships; interdisciplinary practice and collaboration; systematic, direct and data-based instruction; assistive technology; instructional technology for teaching and supervision (e.g. video platforms; online platforms); and advanced applications of research methodology. The project will also disseminate materials, tools and resources developed as a part of this consortia through a website dedicated to the consortia.
