Project Description:
People with developmental disabilities, their families and the agencies which support them are often not aware of opportunities for volunteerism in NJ. Often people with disabilities are the recipients of volunteer efforts and not seen by the general public as volunteers to others. National service projects are also unaware of the potential for volunteers among people with developmental disabilities. There is also a need for raising awareness of Centers for Independent Living in NJ of the possibilities of both national service projects and community based opportunities for people with disabilities. This grant allows to start exploring all sorts of possibilities for volunteerism, including national service projects. The Boggs Center will work with the State of New Jersey Commission on National and Community Service to increase awareness of current training opportunities related to people with disabilities for Americorps program directors, and, correspondingly, to facilitate ways for Americorps to lead presentations and exhibits at conferences and meetings of disability networks. The Boggs Center will meet with representatives of NJ Provider Agencies to look at current practices in volunteerism. This will provide the basis for a best practices booklet on volunteering for people with developmental disabilities and for more awareness about national service opportunities. Technical Assistance on working with people with developmental disabilities will be provided upon request to Americorps managers. There will be at least one training for Americorps managers developed.
