Project Description:
The LA Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and Related Disabilities (LEND) program is a nine-month interdisciplinary training program that incorporates both didactic and experiential learning in clinical and community-based settings. LA LEND prepares graduate students, family members, self-advocates, and practicing professionals to become future leaders in designing and implementing services, policies, advocacy, and consuming/conducting research and evaluation addressing the needs and priorities of children with autism spectrum disorders, other neurodevelopmental disabilities and developmental disabilities and their families. 1. Need: There is a shortage of healthcare/education professionals from culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) backgrounds prepared with leadership skills to address health/education disparities experienced by families and individuals with ASD/DD. 2. Overall goals and objectives: 3. Unusual features: Learning occurs in interdisciplinary cohorts (including individuals with ASD/DD and parents) using a "flipped-classroom" approach and both live and virtual formats. Trainees complete a variety of clinical/field experiences designed to promote their awareness and understanding of complex systems and environments families and service providers must navigate. Each year the project will target the emerging need of increasing awareness of, and services for, families and individuals experiencing FASD. 4. Expected benefits: Increase the number of professionals and (self)advocates from traditionally underrepresented backgrounds prepared to serve families and individuals with ASD/DD; including those who experience health disparities.
