Project Description:
The intent of this project is to help improve access to high-quality parenting support for Arizona parents with intellectual or developmental disabilities (IDD) who have infants or young children. Researchers at the Institute for Human Development (IHD), with extensive experience in administering home visiting programs, will conduct research leading to the development of materials and training designed to enhance evidence-based home visiting programs (EBHV) in ways that are responsive to the needs of parents with IDD. This one-year project is the first step in a research agenda that establishes a foundation for subsequent piloting and testing of the home visiting program enhancements for parents with IDD. The populations of interest are (a) parents with IDD who have children ages 0-3 and (b) home visitors who provide parenting information and support through EBHV programs in Arizona. These parents are in need of higher-quality parenting care and support, as many home visiting resources are centered around neurotypical parents. Through this project, home visiting programs and home visitors will receive materials and training that enhance the curricula (information and resources) and the delivery (relationship-based support) to address the needs of parents with IDD. Research on home visiting and intellectual disability topics through literature review and interviews will provide the team with a knowledge base around which to design home visiting materials and trainings appropriate for supporting all parents.
