Project Description:
Need: Approximately 30-35 victims of child abuse lose their lives annually in Los Angeles County 85 percent are younger than age five and 43 percent are younger than the age of one. Children with developmental disabilities are disproportionately among the victims of child abuse. Overall Goals and Objectives: To provide appropriate clinical services, including comprehensive medical evaluations and individual and family therapy, to children who are suspected victims of child abuse in a child-and-family-friendly environment. To engage in prevention, education, and research activities that lead to the accurate identification of child abuse in the community and that build capacity for community organizations to provide compassionate and developmentally-appropriate care. Unusual Features: Project Heal operates under the E-G Audrey Hepburn grant.Project Heal is a community-based program that provides comprehensive services to address the many mental health needs of child abuse victims, including those with developmental disabilities. Trained bilingual practitioners also provide a variety of services and treatment programs to the victim and their family, including parent support groups and school consultations. Expected Benefits: More competent, developmentally-appropriate care for children impacted by child abuse, leading to improved lifecourse outcomes. Ability of community to better identify and respond to the needs of children affected by child abuse, including those who have developmental disabilities.
