Project Description:
The Centers of Excellence for Autism and Other Developmental Disabilities Epidemiology project (Autism Centers Project) is a joint project between the Disease Control and Environmental Epidemiology Division at the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment and JFK Partners, a clinical facility affiliated with the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. The goals of this project are to: 1) develop a population-based epidemiological surveillance system for autism spectrum disorders (ASD) in the Denver Metropolitan area; 2) improve the ability of community service providers to screen for, diagnose and treat ASD; 3) implement an ASD case-control study with other Centers; and 4) develop, implement and evaluate a study to evaluate the validity of diagnostic tools to classify ASDs in children with profound mental retardation. Goals one through three will be carried out in conjunction with other Center partners by working collaboratively through a Coordinating Committee and its work groups. Goal four will be carried out as a Center-specific special study.
