Project Description:
The Ohio State University (OSU) Nisonger Center, in partnership with key stakeholders, will support a Rehabilitation Research and Training Center (RRTC) to improve the health and function of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) through this five-year project. The goal of this center is to conduct systematic research that contributes to improving the long-term health-related function and quality of life outcomes for adults with IDD, including adults from racially and ethnically diverse backgrounds. The research objectives are to: 1) Develop and test health and health-related quality of life measures to increase self-report in adults with IDD; 2) Determine the prevalence of mental health conditions and health status among adults with IDD; and 3) Develop and manualize psychotherapy for adults with IDD. Anticipated outcomes include: 1) adults with IDD will speak for themselves in health research; 2) known prevalence of people with IDD and co-occurring mental health conditions; 3) better understanding of health outcomes in adults with IDD and co-occurring mental health conditions; and 4) manualized psychotherapy to advance mental health treatment for adults with IDD. The expected products are: 1) new cognitively accessible, reliable, and valid health measures for adults with IDD; 2) manualized anxiety intervention for adults with IDD; and 3) peer-reviewed publications, cognitively accessible data briefs, conference presentations, and training webinars. To ensure the quality and relevance of our work, the OSU Nisonger RRTC will engage people with IDD and other minoritized identities throughout the project to emerge as a national resource on health and function for people with IDD.
