Project Description:
This program provides critical knowledge, skills, and social networking to parent-run community-based organization leaders (founders, executive directors, and others in leadership positions) providing services for children and youth with IDD and their families in under-resourced communities. The project is based on a peer-mentorship model where established CBO leaders mentor and provide workshops to newer and less established CBOs. The CHLA team provides programmatic and organizational support The project addresses three capacity-building areas:1) Resource Development, consisting of coaching and consulting in non-profit management; 2) Leadership Development, consisting of enhancing communication skills to manage individuals and teams; and promoting self-care, empowerment and personal identity development; and 3) Social Networking and Social Capital Development among the CBO cohort members, and with Mentor CBOs leaders and their respective social networks. Currently the program supports 24 CBOs that provide direct services to thousands of people with IDD and their families, mostly in Los Angeles County, but several in Northern California. CBO services include social recreation, domestic violence prevention, providing developmental services to people with IDD presently incarcerated or facing re-entry, school transition preparedness, mental health services, and supporting military families with children with IDD. There continues to be is a high demand for this program. The project activities are in three major capacity-building areas:1) Resource Development, consisting of coaching and consulting in non-profit management; 2) Leadership Development, consisting of enhancing communication skills to manage individuals and teams; and promoting self-care, empowerment and personal identity development; and 3) Social Networking and Social Capital Development among the CBO cohort members, and with Mentor CBOs leaders and their respective social networks. The two new focus areas in Year 3 are: 1) funding development and 2) increasing social enterprise capacity, also with the goal of increasing fiscal sustainability.
