Fiscal Year:
2005
Contact Information:
Project Description:
Year 1 of this project focused on researching training for direct care workers. We chose to create our own training curriculum with the assistance of service providers, DSPs, consumers, and family members. Year 2 of this project focused on revising and piloting the manaul and training. Year 3, we conducted the recruitment campaign combining efforts with the Division of Aging & Adult Services. The media campaign consisted of newspaper ads, billboards, commercial, counter cards, and a web site. A kick off of the campaign was held at the state capitol. We also developed a pre/post test for the training curriculum and began training statewide. The focus shifted from training DSPs to creating regional training teams around the state who could then carry out training at times, locations, and in increment more convenient to service provider organizations. Year 4, (2004-2005) is focused on creating a state chapter of the National Alliance of Direct Support Professionals, supporting the regional training teams and creating facilitated video of the training curriculum, and garnering buy in of a voluntary certification for DSPs.
