Project Description:
The Sonoran Center for Excellence in Disabilities at the University of Arizona utilized its personnel and additional resources with community partners to develop a self-paced training module for Community Health Workers. The module "Engaging People with Disabilities and their Families: Strategies for Communication and Support" is now an active course with CEUs for CHWs and Dieticians. The Sonoran UCEDD partnered closely with the Western Region Public Health Training Center (WRPHTC), one of the ten Regional Public Health Training Centers funded by the Health Resources & Services Administration (HRSA), in launching the course.
The course offers CEUs (1.5) that apply toward AZ's newly launched voluntary CHW licensing. AHCCCS (Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System), Arizona's Medicaid program, applied for and received CMS authority to reimburse CHW services. These services must be recommended by a physician or other licensed healing arts practitioner and provided by licensed CHWs.
The course includes the tenets of self-advocacy, inclusion, and respect that are important to people with disabilities, culturally responsive practices, working with local communities, and people with disabilities and their families. It also provides a policy overview.
Western Region's coursework is available to all Arizona learners who take the module. While the information targets Arizonans, it is also available to any interested person outside of Arizona.
