Project Description:
The Sonoran University Center of Excellence in Developmental Disabilities Education, Research and Service (UCEDD) will educate and train health sciences students, residents and other health care professionals in how to provide competent health care in partnership with individuals with developmental disabilities (DD) and their families. The Sonoran UCEDD has identified the development of systems of competent health care for people with DD as an important goal. To achieve that goal, pre-service training of health care professionals is crucial. Activities to be carried out under the project include: Yearly Interprofessional Conference on Disability and professional development of medical students. Task 1.1.3: Develop medical students as teachers in the area of DD, through skill building and supported involvement in presentations to peers and local and national inter-professional conferences on disability. Task 1.1.4: Develop medical students as community leaders in the area of DD, through supported involvement in program development for the Healthy Athletes program of Special Olympics of Southern Arizona (SOAZ). Task 1.1.5: Recruit, train, and utilize PWDD as co-educators for our annual inter-professional conference on disability.
