Project Description:
The goal of Hookui 5 is to support all Native Hawaiian students - including students with disabilities, at-risk, and gifted and talented, to increase enrollment of Native Hawaiian students in postsecondary degree and certification programs leading to employment. This goal will be achieved by building on 12 years of Hookui experience supporting over 1,400 Native Hawaiian high school students to achieve their career goals. Utilizing the Hookui model of mentoring, tutoring, individualized computer learning, and financial support for college classes while still in high school. The project is aligned with the Hawaii Department of Education Na Hopena A'o which supports the total well-being of students. Hookui 5 added a new component targeting gifted and talented students by providing wrap-around supports offering opportunities in place-based learning, Native Hawaiian identity in the 21st century, strength-based mentoring, attending and presenting at professional conferences and competitive internships with UH Manoa's Native Hawaiian Student Services, and the Hawaii Department of Education Office of Hawaiian Education. At least 50 students will be part of the mentoring cohort. In addition, the project will arrange financial assistance for another 160 students. The total number of students served will be at least 210. There will be an intensive mentoring cohort created and supported at each of the 4 public high schools, public charter schools, and/or Native Hawaiian immersion schools; 1 on Molokai, 1 on Kauai, and 2 on the Big Island.
