Project Description:
Supported Decision-Making (SDM) is a legal support option that allows people with disabilities of all ages to get the help they may need to make choices in different areas of life, such as their personal life, healthcare, and/or finances. SDM differs from more restrictive means of support (e.g., guardianship) by ensuring the individual retains the right to make all final decisions about their life. With SDM, an individual chooses a person, or multiple different people, to act as a "supporter" to help them make and communicate life decisions. The types of support needed, and the areas of life which supporters can provide help, differ from person to person. These terms are agreed upon between an individual and their chosen supporter(s) through a Supported Decision-Making Agreement Form. The Center for Disabilities Studies (CDS), through the Delaware Network for Excellence in Autism (DNEA) and Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and related Disabilities (LEND), will collaborate with the Delaware Developmental Disability Council (DDC) to plan and lead a statewide event and health promotion initiative to improve awareness and access to supported decision-making tools and resources. This initiative will consist of four activities: (1) an interdisciplinary planning meeting; (2) a supported decision-making summit for families and people with disabilities; (3) quality improvement data collection activities; and (4) the development of health promotion resources to raise awareness about supported decision-making among the disability community.
