Project Description:
Obesity and its related co-morbidities are particularly acute in Michigan, which has been one of the ten heaviest states for the last decade, and currently ranks #2 in our nation for prevalence of unhealthy weight. Moreover, Detroit has recently been identified as the fattest city in the US. Before implimenting any intervention program, it is critical to first identify barriers to physical fitness and physical activity participation and ways to overcome these barriers in urban children. Four focus groups were conducted with teachers and parents of children in grades 4-5 from two elementary schools in Oak Park, MI. Two of the focus groups were with teachers and two were with parents. The discussion focused on the identification of barriers to physical activity for Oak Park children and potential ways to adapt intervention programs to overcome these barriers and best meet the needs of an urban population.
