Kansas Navigator Series for Supported Decision Making
Project Description:
Internal Project # 1003897-908; Previously J. Bumble
To address the KCDD's Five Year State Plan (Goal 1, Objectives 1&2; Goal 2 Objectives
1&5), the Kansas University Center on Developmental Disabilities (a non-profit), along with its
partners, propose a self-advocate led virtual learning series, the Kansas Navigator Series (KNS),
with the purpose of (1) increasing awareness of supported decision-making (SDM) among
Kansans with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) and their families and (2)
increasing awareness of evidence-based practices to support community inclusion, integration,
and access to SDM. KNS will feature four learning modules focused on SDM, dignity of risk,
self-determination, and establishing circles of natural supports in the community. Each learning
module will include live virtual workshops, curated materials for self-directed learning, and
extension activities to support goal setting and relationship-building for attendees.
Self-advocates with I/DD will lead the development and delivery of each learning module and connect with participants 1:1 through our virtual learning management system (Talent
LMS). Project goals include: (1) Create the KNS alongside self-advocates with I/DD to ensure relevance, feasibility, and accessibility; (2) Leverage the KNS learning series to empower self-advocates and their families to engage in SDM and advocate for individual needs and preferences; (3) Evaluate the KNS to measure its impact and refine the learning series based on
attendee feedback; and (4) Build capacity to spur growth, knowledge, and sustainability of the
KNS across Kansas. We aim for KNS to support 100 Kansas self-advocates and families over 1 year. We will develop and deliver the learning series in collaboration with two self-advocate-led organizations, the Self Advocate Coalition of Kansas (SACK) and the Coalition for Truth in
Independence (CTI). All learning series sessions will be recorded, and materials will be housed on a public website to support dissemination and use across Kansas.
