Project Description:
The Sonoran Center for Excellence in Disabilities at the University of Arizona will utilize its personnel and resources together with our community partners to enhance the public health workforce serving individuals with disabilities in the state. Efforts will focus on developing educational programs and professional development opportunities that improve the skills of public health workers to provide culturally and linguistically competent services and supports for people with disabilities. Content and formats will be determined with input and feedback from public health workers and administrators. Project staff will collaborate with state agencies and public health systems to explore establishing training requirements, incentives such as pay increases, and policy and procedures that promote capacity building, retention, and sustainable practices.
Objectives:
Engage input and feedback from public health workers and administrators to develop content and formats.
Collaborate with state agencies and public health systems to explore establishing training requirements, incentives such as pay incentives, and policy and procedures that promote capacity building, retention, and sustainable practices.
In 2018, Arizona signed a bill to create a voluntary certification for Community Health Workers (CHW/CHR). A "Certified CHW (Community Health Workers)" means the Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS) may issue a certificate to an individual who meets the requirements outlined and developed in partnership with the statewide Arizona Community Health Worker organization (AZCHOW).
A CHW/CHR builds individual and community capacity by increasing health knowledge and self-sufficiency through community education, informal counseling, social support, and advocacy.
