Investigating Caregiver Recall and Understanding within the Hearing and Speech Center
Project Description:
The goal of the present study is to survey primary caregivers of pediatric patients and determine their recall and understanding of the information provided to them during their child's appointment and determine the impact of language barriers and interpreters on recall and understanding. Participants will include primary caregivers of pediatric patients who were seen through the Hearing and Speech Center at either the Sheikh Zayed main campus of the Takoma Theater Regional Outpatient Cetner. Potential participants will be asked to complete a handout indicating interest and consent in participating. They will be screened for eligibility and contacted by investigates to schedule a phone interview. This interview will be audio recorded and conducted by a bilingual employee of the Hearing and Speech Center. Participants will be asked about their Audiology or Speech/Language appointment, what tests were performed, the results of said tests, diagnosis, and clinical recommendations. They will be asked subjective questions regarding their emotions prior to and after the appointment, the use of absence of an interpreter, as well as their feeling and opinions regarding interpreter use and the information provided to them. This will be analyzed after the interview for understanding and patterns. This study is ongoing.
