Project Description:
We propose a 6-week internship program that will begin June 25 and end August 3. We also propose a 4-week career discovery/assessment and job matching process spread across a three month period starting in March and completed by the middle of May. These assessments will be used to identify their strengths and limitations, job and personal preferences, and potential technology needs of the job seekers. These assessments will lay the groundwork for providing a more comprehensive Career Discovery Profile and will provide us the necessary information to develop an individualized plan for each job-seeker for the 6-week program. During June, 2018, FCBDD staff will participate in a 16-hour training split across two days that will focus on various topics, including using evidence-based practices (such as prompting strategies, providing reinforcement, and fading supports) when teaching new skills, the career discovery process, and resources provided by Employment First that they can access. During the 6-week program, we will provide staff with additional feedback as they work with the job-seekers in their internships. Over the course of this FCBDD discovery program, we will serve 12-14 job-seekers and 8-10 FCBDD staff. Each job-seeker will attend their internship two days per week and class on Fridays each week. We propose that the job-seekers and staff come for 6 hours on each of their assigned days. It is possible that timing for each day may be adjusted up or down based on the individual needs of the job-seekers. A Meet and Greet orientation will be provided for FCBDD staff, job seekers, parents and guardians to discuss the components of the program in June, 2018. A flier will be prepared to share information about the Meet and Greet orientation and the August 8th Certificate ceremony. During the 6-week program, all identified job-seekers will attend classes at OSU on each Friday from 10-1. Job-seekers will develop their final presentations over the course of these classes. During these classes, we will teach the job-seekers a variety of skills based on the results of the assessment process including: employability skills, social skills, consumer spending skills, and community safety skills (e.g., familiarity with campus safety, learning to carry identification, stranger danger, practicing navigating the medical campus). They will also spend time engaging in job shadows, informational interviews, and employment tours. In the final two sessions, we will conduct any relevant post-program assessments and finalize reports and the vocational sections of the Career Discovery Profile. In August, we will have all of the job-seekers and FCBDD staff who have completed the program participate in a certificate ceremony, where they will have the opportunity to be recognized for their accomplishments and have the opportunity to share some of their experiences from the program through their final presentations.
