Walk with Ease

Project Description:
People with disabilities experience chronic disease at higher rates than their non-disabled peers, and arthritis is the most common co-morbid condition for people with disabilities. The goal of this project is to support local Walk with Ease Leaders in carrying out the 6 week walking program developed by the Arthritis Foundation. Many of the sessions include mini lecturettes that review specific topics for health education (arthritis, coping with pain, goal setting). The lecturettes will include a power point presentation with plain language, a 3rd grade reading level, visuals to enhance understanding, closed captioning, and a sign language interpreter. Many people with IDD do not read thus making the WWE book useless so we are working to include much of the information in the book to be disseminated using the lecturettes. People with disabilities can participate in the walking program and benefit more from the accessible lecturettes than before: resulting in a greater understanding of those health topics as they learn how to address barriers to participation.
