GCDD Expanding the Public Health Workforce within the Disability Network
Project Description:
This project is a collaborative effort between the UCEDD (Partners for Inclusive Commuities) and the DD Council (Governors' Council on Developmental Disabilities) to expand the public health workforce in Arkansas. Given the workforce crisis in Arkansas and nationally , people with developmental disabilities are unable to access the supports they need to live in the community. While the primary reasons for this workforce shortage are clearly associated with low wages, limited benefits, and the lack of professional recognition for the job, the remedy for these issues is not simple or immediately forthcoming. This project is designed to identify and address other factors that might be helpful, in the short-term, in improving the recruitment and retention of Direct Support Professionals (DSPs). The activities of the project will be informed by data collected from community-based provider organizations across the state so that the responses can be tailored to the differences in these communities. Potential strategies such as recognition programs, career pathways, professional development opportunities, mentoring programs, and use of technology for in-home supports will be investigated as options. Additionally, training modules on trauma-informed care and effective communication from recruitment through hiring and support of new employees will be developed. These strategies and modules will be consolidated into a Tool Kit for providers, field tested, revised based on feedback, and then distributed to community organizations who are interested in using it.
