Project Description:
The long-term goal of this project is to equip community constituents (i.e., parents, educators, school psychologists) with an enhanced program for improving the quality of life for children with special needs by establishing a mechanism for parents and educators to work collaboratively to help children with disabilities achieve academic success. The primary objective of this project is to teach parents effective instructional practices for helping their children with disabilities achieve academic competence. To accomplish this goal, children with disabilities and their parents will attend an eight-week workshop designed to teach parents how to intervene academically with their children. These workshops will cover a variety of topics including brief assessment of academic skills, effective reading and math interventions, study skills, and monitoring intervention effectiveness in the home. In addition, involvement from area schools will assist in initial recruitment efforts and potential sustained programming through collaboration between local school psychologists and community school personnel. We believe this project will result in increasing the capacity of parents with academic intervention skills necessary to assist their children with academic challenges and ultimately strengthening the competence of children with disabilities.
