Medcats for Developmental Medicine (AADMD Student Chapter)
Project Description:
The Sonoran UCEDD's medical director, Dr. Tamsen Bassford is the advisor for the student interest group, Medcats for Developmental Medicine, a student chapter of the American Academy of Developmental Medicine and Dentistry (AADMD). Medcats sponsors a number of activities to help UA COM Tucson students learn more about people with IDD and how to provide them with better health care. These include:
<ul>
<li>lunchtime presentations by professionals as well as patients, and their families, to provide more information about health care for people with IDD.</li>
<li>"Lead the Field, Special Olympics," which pairs UA medical students with Special Olympics athlete "buddies." </li>
<li>Working with Special Olympics of Arizona to develop and provide health programs for Special Olympics athletes and organize groups of UA COM-Tucson medical students to work with athletes to provide fun health education activities at local Special Olympics events.</li></ul>
