Project Description:
At the current time serious inequities exist in the healthcare outcomes experienced by people with IDD. Members of this population have a significantly higher likelihood of high blood pressure, diabetes, congestive heart failure extensive overuse of psychiatric medications, and a host of other chronic illnesses compared to the general population. Although there are a number of systemic factors associated with this state of affairs, one contributing factor is the lack of knowledge medical professionals possess with respect to supporting the health of this segment of the population, ableist attitudes towards people with IDD, poorly conceptualized training in healthcare education programs regarding this population, as well as a lack of practical experience working with and for people with IDD. This project proposes to develop and pilot a series of educational modules aimed at undergraduate students considering careers in the helping fields that will serve as the initial phases of education about people with IDD, their health care related support needs, and positive approaches to developing effective health care provider-patient relationships with members of this group. It is expected that students who take part in the program with develop a great appreciation of how to most effectively interact with and support people wit IDD in health care environments, less ableistic attitudes towards this population with significantly reduced implicit bias.
