Center:
Fiscal Year:
2023
Contact Information:
Project Description:
Addresses the critical problem of rape, sexual abuse, and violence toward people with disabilities through the Safety and Sexual Violence Prevention project. The goal is to Promote the safety of people with disabilities and the elimination of sexual violence by building capacity, providing training and technical assistance, and developing a comprehensive systems approach that addresses all levels of the ecological model including issues related to social norms. This project emphasizes primary prevention activities through information provision and training for people with disabilities, families of children with disabilities, professionals and other interested individuals who act on behalf of people with disabilities. Focusing on empowering individuals with disabilities, their advocates and their families is consistent with the movement in the field of disabilities toward self-direction. It is also consistent with the Centers for Disease Control and Preventions (CDC) public health approach to injury and violence prevention. The major activities of this project propose to prevent the initial occurrence of violence; to educate on risk and protective factors by providing information related to healthy relationships/boundaries both with staff in programs that work with people with disabilities, people with disabilities (self-advocates) and families. The Safety and Sexual Violence Prevention Project works in conjunction with several other commission funded projects, providers of services to people with disabilities (Provider Task Force), self-advocates (Self-Advocacy Task Force), families and with the state agency that oversees services for people with developmental disabilities.
