Adulting - Life Course Community Training
Project Description:
Linda Rammler developed a virtual Adulting Series for the UCEDD. The purpose of the program is to introduce concepts related to living in the community as an adult and for participants to develop a "Transition Portfolio" they can refer back to as well as share with their families, teams, and others who support them in Charting (and implementing) their LifeCourse.* The initial content was piloted in a 7-session program in August 2021 but the number of sessions has now increased to 11. This program has been repeated five (5) times: two (2) were open invite for transition aged youth and young adults, two (2) with Local Education Agency Transition Programs (Montville and Hartford), and one (1) was modified for adults planning to live on their own. Topics are self-advocacy and self-determination, social capital, a place of your own to call home, ideas for good adult use of money, employment first, thinking about postsecondary education, healthy living, and being a good citizen. In addition to reviewing and discussing PowerPoints for each topic, participants watched videos made or selected to support content, received handouts including a glossary and list of links to follow, had forms to fill out as a group or with support between sessions, and access to other plain-language resources. Each group of participants completed Action Plans after their final session and reported on their progress to Dr. Rammler during check-ins afterward to receive technical assistance to overcome barriers and/or modify their plans.
