Project Description:
This project is formed as a partnership between the UMKC Institute for Human Development (UMKC IHD), the UMKC School of Medicine Department of Biomedical and Health Informatics (DBHI), and the Childrens Mercy Hospital Research Institute. This core project team will establish an Advisory Council to assist in this project: to provide a comprehensive review of health status for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) in the state of Missouri. With the expertise of the Advisory Council, the core project team will undergo a comprehensive review of identified data exploring health disparities for individuals with I/DD compared to the general population. The goals of our project are to 1) determine differences and similarities between individuals with I/DD and the general population regarding health status, behavioral health, health outcomes and morbidity across the lifespan to with a focus on key indicators that the intersectionality of I/DD, race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, rural vs. urban demographics, and gaps in healthcare for individuals with I/DD in Missouri; 2) conduct an in-depth supplemental analysis to explore a gap in the data on healthcare in Missouri for people with I/DD as it relates to data on healthcare collected for the general population; 3) report our findings in an impactful way for people with I/DD. This project responds to the belief that quality, accessible data can be leveraged to improve community health.
