Association of Maternal & Child Health Programs Family Delegate
Project Description:
The Hawaii State Department of Health, Family Health Services Division (FHSD) works to improve the health and well-being of Hawaii's mothers, infants and children, including children with special healthcare needs (CSHN) and is the state maternal and child health (MCH) program. FHSD is a member of the Association of Maternal and Child Health Programs (AMCHP), the national professional organization for state MCH public health programs and other affiliated agencies and individuals.
AMCHP supports family/consumer engagement in all MCH programs and agencies as a best practice to assure programs effectively address the needs of those served. The Title V MCH Services Block Grant program defines family/consumer engagement as a 'partnership': "patients, families, their representatives, and health professionals working in active partnership at various levels across the health care system – direct care, organizational design and governance, and policy making—to improve health and health care. This partnership is accomplished through the intentional practice of working with families for the ultimate goal of positive outcomes in all areas through the life course."
Each state AMCHP membership includes an opportunity to list a family delegate. The Family Delegate provides technical assistance and sharing of life experience to assure families are key partners across FHSD programs. The family delegate works with the Division planner and staff to develop organizational practices and mechanisms for family partnership across program areas. Special attention to work with under represented or high risk families, populations, communities.
