PJ SEPTA Autism Acceptance Program and Color Run Obstacle Course

Center:
Fiscal Year:
2022
Contact Information:
Project Description:
This program is designed to educate students grades K-12, teachers grades K-12 and parents in the community about what Autism is and how to support and include those with Autism on a regular basis. Educational programs are developed and shared with teachers in Port Jefferson School District that they teach to the children in grades K-12. The school district works in conjunction with the Autism Initiative to provide professional development to school teachers. Parent education is provided through Port Jefferson SEPTA and via The Autism Initiative at Stony Brook with an info table at our obstacle course event. Once the education is completed the program culminates in our Autism Acceptance Color Run Obstacle Course Event which ran this year on Saturday 11/6/21. Students, families and teachers come together to have fun running our obstacle course and getting doused in color powder! They support each other, they learn together and they have fun together. The hope is to create awareness and acceptance of those with Autism as well as hopefully forge some new friendships for the rest of the school year!
