HUGHES: Psychosocial Stress and its Relation to Maternal and Infant Outcomes among Women with Disabilities

Contact Information:
Project Description:
The University of Montana Rural Institute is collaborating with researchers from the University of Virginia on a 5-year NIH-funded project designed to improve the understanding of the extent to which psychosocial stress (namely, interpersonal violence and depression) during the perinatal period is related to maternal and infant outcomes (namely, low birth weight and preterm birth) in women with diverse disabilities. This project involves analyses of population-based data across women with and without disabilities, interviews with pregnant and new mothers with disabilities, and focus groups with perinatal health providers. Expected benefits include improving perinatal care for this under-served group of women. This research will also serve as the foundation for the development and evaluation of future prevention interventions designed to prevent intimate partner violence and its related impacts among women with disability, thereby optimizing pregnancy outcomes for women of childbearing age living with disability.
