Project Description:
Infants, children, and adolescents with neurodevelopmental and related disabilities represent a major challenge to service provision within the US. The problem is particularly compelling in the Southeast, with Alabama, Georgia, Mississipp, South Carolina, and Louisiana occupying the bottom five positions among all 50 states with respect to key indicators of health and wellness. These include high rates of infant mortality, low birth weight, school drop out, teenage pregnancy, mental retardation, neurodevelopmental delay, and prenatal exposure to alcohol and illegal drugs. Only 50% of the undergraduate and graduate programs training individuals in Alabama to intervene with preschoolers with disabilities and their families emphasize key issues such as family assessment and intervention, team process, and care coordination. Alabama and the surrounding states continue to need a comprehensive system of preservice and continuing education which provides leadership education and training experiences to individuals who are or will be working with children with neurodevelopmental and related disabilities and their families. This project will improve the health status of infants, children, and adolescents with neurodevelopmental and related disabilities, leadership education for professionals in appropriate disciplines, continuing education, technical assistance, and interagency consultation. This education focuses on clinical competence and leadership abilities and will include 1)educating/training graduate students employing a core curriculum of interdisciplinary, clinical, and leadership skills, 2)providing leadership education which emphasizes interdisciplinary, family centered, culturally approproate, comprehensive case management services, 3) developing research awareness, 4) participating as members of community advisory boards, state planning committees, state and local task forces, regional planning committees, and other panels dedicated to the improvement of children's health consistent with the Healthy People 2010 Objective and Bright Futures Guidelines.
