Project Description:
Demonstration Classroom The Kelly O?Leary Center for Autism Spectrum Disorder, Division of Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics, Cincinnati Children?s Hospital, has partnered with the Department of Student Services of Cincinnati Public Schools, the University of Cincinnati, and the Hamilton Country Developmental Disabilities Services to launch a Demonstration Classrooms for children diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder. Within these classrooms, staff from local and regional school districts work alongside autism specialists from CCHMC and UC daily and participate as a full member of the classroom staff. Educators, speech pathologists, occupational therapists, psychologists, paraprofessionals and university students in related professional careers will receive training through this site and participate in designing, implementing, and evaluating evidence-based classroom strategies for children with autism spectrum disorders. This embedded professional development will provide a setting where skilled special educators/ intervention specialists will be able to model effective instruction that can be replicated by other educational programs. Students with autism spectrum disorder and teachers will participate in the program on a time-limited basis and then transition back to home districts. In this way, home districts will be able to improve current classroom strategies or design and implement a model classroom based on the principles learned. Using this demonstration training model, we plan to increase both local capacity and the quality of educational and treatment services available throughout the region, while permitting each of the professional groups to learn from the expertise and experience of the others.
