Project Description:
This grant is to implement an Advocacy and Leadership Training for Native Americans with Disabilities & Their Families program through the Center for Disabilities Oyate` Circle. The Oyate` Circle is a proven model for partnership development and community engagement for the nine Tribal Nations and off-reservation communities in South Dakota. The Oyate` Circle will utilize this effective partnership model to develop and implement this new Native Americans and Families with Disabilities Advocacy and Leadership Training program. The Primary Goal is to develop and implement an advocacy and leadership training and materials specific to Native Americans with disabilities and their families with and to raise the expectations of people with disabilities and their families and to increase their ability to communicate effectively with others. Objective 1.1: Establish an advisory group of Native Americans with disabilities and their families to advise and participate in the development and training activities; Objective 1.2: Provide three culturally appropriate Leadership and Advocacy sessions annually in at least two reservation communities based on community needs; Objective 1.3: Integrate the LifeCourse Framework philosophy and tools into the culturally designed training sessions. Objective 1.4: Continue to provide an ongoing presence and sustainable resource in Indian Country on disability related issues and needs.
