Project Description:
Ulu A`e Transitions aims to improve the academic and HĀ achievement of at-promise students by focusing on strengthening resilience as a way of supporting successful navigation of students transitioning from Elem to Middle, Middle to High, and beyond. Supporting goals include (a) parents increasing their understanding of how to support their child thriving in school and (b) educators increasing their capacity to engage Native Hawaiian students & families. Objective 1. Identity and package resources for teachers that incorporate culture-based and digital media skills building activities intended to strengthen resiliency of at-promise youth. Objective 2. Provide educators opportunities to participate in training where they build skills and confidence as well as share their knowledge and successes with their peers. Objective 3. Provide mentoring to schools and educators prepared to integrate HĀ outcomes into their classrooms and school programs (Castle High, King Intermediate, and its Elementary feeder schools). Objective 4. Determine impact of Ulu A`e Transitions on student, parent, and educator groups. Objective 5. Promote and facilitate successful HĀ experiences of educators and their students. Objective 6. Share project resources and success stories of educators and students widely. Here are examples of the student, parent, and educator outcomes expected to be demonstrated by the project. Student outcomes include increased understanding of Native Hawaiian culture & their own cultural identity; improved digital media skills (video production, animation) & relationships with their teachers; strengthened senses of belonging, responsibility, excellence, Aloha, well-being and Hawaii. Long term student impacts include increased school attendance, academic achievement, and on-time graduation rates of Native Hawaiians equaling those of their non-Native Hawaiian peers. Parent outcomes include increased understanding of how to support their children in school; increased satisfaction & involvement/engagement with the school. Educator outcomes include better understanding of how culture and tech rich approaches can be used in the classroom to engage at-promise students; increased adoption of such approaches in their own classroom; improved relationships with students & parents through the use of culture based education approaches; improved social-emotional well-being & sense of belonging with the school.
