Project Description:
An online and face-to-face professional development program for Hawaii Department of Education faculty (teachers/counselors) implementing techniques from 6 years of previous project work. The overall goal is to support Native Hawaiian, ESL, ELL, and students with disabilities towards postsecondary education and certification programs. The program targets rural and free-reduced lunch schools with significant Native Hawaiian student populations. The professional development program includes training on computer-based accelerated learning, college preparation, career exploration, postsecondary financial resources, culture-based, and place-based education techniques to increase diverse populations in successful completion of postsecondary education. Hawaii Department of Education faculty are trained in mentoring and other techniques previously used by project staff who directly served project participants. Hawaii Department of Education faculty teams directly serve student participants under the guidance of project staff. Expected benefits include increased diverse and minority populations who enroll and complete postsecondary educations and certification programs, stronger Native Hawaiian communities, adoption and sustainability of successful techniques in secondary schools to support diverse students.
