Hurricane Harvey brought insurmountable devastation across numerous Texas counties. Following disasters, resources and services are needed to support impacted individuals, especially those most vulnerable to disasters, such as individuals with disabilities and/or access and functional needs. In response to Hurricane Harvey, the Center on Disability and Development at Texas A&M University and the Texas Center for Disability Studies at the University of Texas Austin, created the REsources for Disasters and Disability (REDDy) Directory, a dynamic online resource directory of services and resources.
The REDDy Directory was designed to assist offices of emergency management, long-term recovery committees (LTRCs), disaster case managers, disability-related organizations, disaster-related organizations, and individuals with disabilities in locating resources and services provided to Hurricane Harvey survivors. Design features of the Directory included an online, replicable template to be used in a variety of disasters and transferable to other regions.
Creation of the REDDy Directory
The REDDy Directory template was created as a subset of the Directory of Community Resources (DCR) also by the Center on Disabilities and Development at Texas A&M University. This allows for quick activation after Hurricane Harvey made landfall. Four steps were used by the project staff to curate services/resources available for Harvey survivors.
Proposed Project
With the provided grant funds, collaborators will document the need for directories during times of disaster, steps we took to bring the directory online, and a prototype for others seeking to create a similar resource in their jurisdiction. Through this publication, we intend to assist replicability of the REDDy Directory for communities across the nation.
